Vaping: Myths and Facts


Vaping is still a new and fastly growing industry, which makes it really hard at times to tell vaping myths from vaping facts. Here are a few key issues where it is important to separate truth from hearsay when it comes to e-cigarettes, vaping and vaping products.

Myth: Vaping is just as harmful as smoking

One of the most prevalent myths on vaping is that it is just as bad for the user´s body as regular smoking. This is simply not true. In fact, research has shown that the comparative harm caused by vaping vs smoking is significantly lower. Not only does vape juice contain lower nicotine levels, but it also contains fewer toxic chemicals overall than those found in regular tobacco cigarettes. That is why vaping has become one of the preferred harm reduction tools among smokers looking to make a change for the better.(1)

Myth: E-liquid contains antifreeze

This common myth arose from the fact that one of the ingredients of e-liquid is propylene glycol, a chemical solvent found in various consumer products, one of which happens to be antifreeze. However, propylene glycol can also be found in a variety of other products such as foods and cosmetics. In this regard, it is important to remember that the FDA has classified propylene glycol as “generally recognized as safe,” deeming it acceptable for use in flavorings, drugs, and cosmetics, and as a direct food additive. 

Myth: Vaping is completely unregulated

Vaping is still a young industry, which some people misinterpret as meaning it is an unregulated one. The fact is that, just as any other industry, vaping is subject to specific regulations dictated by agencies both at the state and federal level, such as the FDA, the CDC and others. At the same time, vaping research is conducted all the time in order to better understand aspects such as the relation between vaping and the environment or vaping and public health. This makes it possible to improve our understanding of vaping products and ensure that they are as safe and enjoyable as possible. (2)

Fact: Vaping can be an effective tool to quit smoking

As already stated, vaping has been proven to be a viable alternative for those trying to quit smoking. E-cigarrete research indicates that vaping is generally a more effective nicotine replacement therapy than other popular methods, such as patches, gums or sprays. In fact, a 2021 review found people who used e-cigarettes to quit smoking, in conjunction with face-to-face support, may be up to twice as likely to succeed as people who used other methods.(3)

Fact: Vaping is not completely risk-free

Even if vaping is a less harmful alternative to smoking, that doesn’t mean it is completely risk-free. Nicotine addiction is still a possible outcome when using vaping products regularly and the accidental ingestion of vape liquid is a risk which may lead to severe intoxication if not treated fast. Long-term use of e-cigarettes or vaping products can also cause breathing problems and may result in organ damage in the long run. That is why it is important to be aware that not all vaping products are created equal and that using low quality and unregulated products increases these risks.
