The Hartford Hawks men’s basketball team has been my favorite team in college basketball for about as long as I’ve been a fan of hoops. It was really a fun, tight basketball team, that won its share of national championships in the 1960s. A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to play for the team, which led to a lot of my basketball friends asking me what it was like to watch the team play in the spring and summer.
The team plays its games in the Hartford Convention Center, which has a seating capacity of 12,000. The Hawks are the only NCAA Division I men’s basketball program to play in the new arena. The arena itself is an impressive building designed by architect Charles Moore, who also designed the Hartford Civic Center.
The Hawks practice in the arena, which has a basketball court, gym, a library, and cafeteria. The courts have their own lighting system. It’s almost like the Hawks are living together in the same space.
The first-year players are on the team in a dorm-style environment where they can train together in the gym, watch games, and even have a few private practices. The dorms are part of a $7 million renovation that will be completed in the fall. The Hawks lost coach Dan Robards to the Toronto Raptors last summer after just six games. The team hired former Duke assistant Jim Boylan to be its coach, and he has helped them get into a more competitive conference (ACC).
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been so frustrated with the lack of quality coaching on college campuses that I’ve felt like the only way I’m going to get better is to start coaching. On the other hand, I’m also tired of hearing how much better the basketball programs seem to be than the one I grew up in.
When I say college basketball programs, I mean the top basketball programs in the country. I mean the ones that are ranked in the top five or six or seven or 10 or 12 or 14 in the USA Today/ESPN/ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. That is, of course, because the rest of the country doesn’t give a damn about the top teams in the country.
That is a pretty misleading statement. The other thing is that most of the other teams I grew up playing against are also among the top 10 or top 15 or top 20 or top 25 or top 30 or top 40 or top 50 or top 100 or top 125 or any other rank (or whatever rank, really) in the USA TodayESPNESPNUSA Today Coaches Poll.
That’s kind of like saying, “I hate you because you’re always on the phone.” That’s one thing where you can’t tell whether you hate someone. They might hate you, but they might not.
No. I would seriously just say that I have never seen a team play a better game than the Haws. They may be the most exciting team in the country. They just do the things that are most important to them, like playing a team sport. I mean, that is why I have never seen a team play a better game than the Haws. In college basketball, the Haws are a powerhouse. Thats because they play a team sport. It’s what they do best. But more than just that, they have a very unique way of doing things, and that is how they play a team game. In fact, their play is so unique that it’s sometimes hard to tell if they are playing a team sport or not.
