The Vanderbilt work based disease program has received recognition for its efforts to reduce occupational asthma in the past. In a recent study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) it was found that the program reduced the number of workers diagnosed with asthma by 90 percent and their mean symptom intensity by 60 percent when compared to a control group of workers in the same industry.
In an industry where workers are often exposed to a lot of potentially harmful chemicals, the program has a lot of potential to prevent disease. In fact, all of those chemicals are known to kill people. But what makes the program work even better is that it makes workers aware of the risks they’re taking by teaching them about what’s normal for them and what can be dangerous, and how to recognize the warning signs of exposure.
The Vanderbilt program is a non-profit organization whose mission is to “educate, train, and support occupational health professionals to improve the health and safety of workers and the environment.” In it, the organization brings together a group of health care professionals, industrial engineers, and public health professionals to educate and train workers so they can make better decisions and be more aware of potential occupational risks. The program is available to students and workers in dozens of countries and in a variety of industries.
It’s all fairly well-crafted, but I’m not convinced that it has the power to truly change workplaces. As a side note, I’d rather workers have a deeper understanding of the factors that influence their work-related decisions and how they’re affected. Instead of “this is what we want to do, so we’re going to do it this way” the more common solution is “this is what we want to do, so we’re going to do it this way.
