Here’s the ultimate list of the top 10 Saint Mary’s basketball players in every position. With the exception of a few who are still in school, the entire list is made up of Saint Mary’s players who have been named the most valuable player on their team on any given season.
With the exception of one guy named Royce Freeman, the entire list of Saint Marys basketball players is made up of players who have been named Most Valuable Player on their team on any given season. As you can see, one of the most interesting things about Saint Marys basketball is that while they did not win the NCAA tournament in any of their seasons, they did win the conference championship (and the school’s first ever title) in each of their seasons.
Saint Marys basketball is not the only school where this has happened. The same is true for the men’s basketball team in most of the NCAA tournament tournaments. The only college team to have been named to the national tournament since the tournament started in 1977 is the University of Connecticut. The other team to win the conference tournament and tournament title is the University of Minnesota. There are several schools that have also won the NCAA tournament with the men’s basketball team, but none of them are Saint Marys.
The Saints have a great reputation for the men’s basketball team. But what about the school’s women’s basketball team? The Saints won the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season title in 2009-10. The women’s basketball team was second in the league in 2010-11, only losing to the University of Arkansas where they won the conference tournament title.
How they got their name. Saint Marys’ first men’s basketball coach was Frank Haithman. There is a statue of Haithman outside of St. Marys’ front entrance.

The Saints were a powerhouse program in the S.W.A.C. during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Then, they fell on hard times and had to rebuild their program. A.J. Williams led the team to the 2000 Southwestern Athletic Conference title in his first year in charge. The team went 12-2 in the 2000-01 season and made a bid to the NCAA tournament. They lost in the first round to Missouri.
I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence that the Saint Mike’s mascot was a former S.W.A.C. player named Haithman, but he’s also the name of the basketball team.
