I hope this helps someone in the latino community, especially those who are dealing with a health issue. I realize that the topic of health access is so controversial that there is no way to cover everything that is out there. I know that we are all fighting this fight, and I’m just trying to help get the word out so that everyone is prepared to start experiencing the healthiest life possible.
The health issue isn’t so much that we don’t have access to health care as it is that we have access to very few health care providers who are willing to help. The number of Latinas who have access to health care is still very low, and the number of Latinas who are being diagnosed with a health issue is also very low. That said, there are some very good health care providers out there.
One of the things that I think is the most important part about health care access is the awareness of it. We hear about people being hospitalized for health issues that should be treated. But we don’t hear about health care access. We hear about the need for treatment but not the ability to access it. There just doesn’t seem to be any recognition of the fact that the ability to get access to health care and the ability to get treatment are two different things.
When a patient is hospitalized, they are not treated by doctors or a nurse. They are treated by a doctor or a nurse, however, who may or may not be a doctor. When a patient is at home, they are treated by a doctor and/or a nurse. When a patient is in the hospital for treatment, they are not treated by a doctor. Doctors and nurses are there, but with a different job description.
I’m sure if you are reading this, you’re a doctor, and you have been trained that a doctor does not give health care to patients who are not their patients. So for example, we can have a patient with diabetes and they are admitted to the hospital. If they are not diabetic, they are treated by a nurse, if they are diabetic, they are treated by a doctor.
I have one more item to mention. Our hospital isn’t a public hospital. Instead, it is a private hospital that is owned by the city of Oakland, CA. And the city has a “special interest” in providing health care to all citizens. So instead of saying, “the city provides health care to all citizens”, we say, “the city provides health care to patients who are not their patients”. I guess that’s how they say it in Spanish.
While I don’t see a problem with this at all, I do see a problem with the idea of the city providing health care to all citizens. I can’t help but feel that such a policy would be a violation of the patient’s rights. If the patient chooses to be treated by the city, that is their choice.
The idea that the city, or any government, is allowed to provide health care to anyone is a little like saying the city is allowed to give free rides to everyone. That sounds a little ridiculous. Its like saying the city is allowed to give free rides to anyone. But, I guess that is what they are doing with the health care. It’s just that they are allowing everyone to be treated in the manner they choose.
The idea that a specific government, or any government, is allowed to provide health care to anyone is a little like saying the city is allowed to give free rides to anyone. Yes, the government is doing this to help with some of the problems that the Latino community experiences. As I mentioned above, a major problem for Latinos is that they are not permitted to access health care that is free. The reason they can’t is because they are not citizens. I see no problem with this. I think it is a way of giving them some of the power over their own bodies, but that is a different story.
