This week Jamie Dupree released his book Self-Awareness, which looks at the human mind as a system, and at the methods by which it operates and how we can fix it. He writes, “The science of self-awareness is complex and fascinating. But there is still plenty of room in the science of self-awareness for an entirely new theory of consciousness. And that theory will be called the multi-level theory of consciousness. Let’s dig in a little.
The multi-level theory of consciousness proposes a theory of consciousness that could radically alter the way we view our inner world. According to the multi-level theory, all of the components of our own consciousness, from the individual neurons, to the experience of the world, to conscious awareness, all come from one place, and all come from the same mind. In other words, the mind is a sort of multi-leveled information network.
The multi-level theory was developed by the psychologist Daniel C. Dennett, who uses the theory to attempt to explain the differences between our mind and the mind of other creatures. For instance, the mind of a tiger is different from the mind of a human being.
The same is true for our thoughts, and our behaviors. For instance, when you drink the liquid from the bottle in your hand, you are not just drinking the liquid. You are tasting the liquid and are aware of what you are drinking. When you think of something, you are thinking of what you are thinking. You are aware that you are thinking of something, that it is something.
This is the same principle that allows us to know something is there when it is not there. Similarly, when you think about, say, your cat, you are thinking about your cat. When you think about your cat’s food, you are thinking about your cat’s food. This is the same principle that allows us to know something is there when it is not there.

The idea is that cat lovers are great at recognizing the subtle clues they see in their cats behavior, but can’t quite tell what they are thinking.
